Romans 15:19 — "...so that from Jerusalem, and round about even unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ."

Where the Gospel first met the Balkans.

The Illyrian Revival Foundation studies and teaches the intertwined biblical, cultural, and historical heritage of the western Balkans — from the Illyrian tribes and Roman Illyricum through the Slavic mission of Cyril and Methodius to the region today.

ILLYRICVM Province of the Roman East, est. AD 9
Founded to hold two threads of the same story — Scripture and the Balkans — in one hand.

Our story

The Illyrian Revival Foundation began with a simple observation: the region the Apostle Paul described reaching "round about unto Illyricum" is the same region whose Christian, Slavic, and Ottoman-era history is rarely taught alongside Scripture at all. We exist to close that gap.

We are a nonprofit educational foundation working across the Balkans and its diaspora communities, building courses, field studies, and public resources that treat biblical history and Balkan history as one connected inheritance rather than two separate subjects.

Our work draws on classical archaeology, Byzantine and Ottoman-era church records, Old Church Slavonic manuscripts, and the biblical text itself — taught by historians, theologians, and regional guides who know this ground firsthand.

Mission statement

The Illyrian Revival Foundation is a nonprofit educational organization that preserves and teaches the biblical and historical heritage of the Illyrian Balkans — through seminars, heritage workshops, a youth fellowship, field study journeys, and free public resources — so that this region's Christian, cultural, and national history is understood as one connected story.

A shared timeline

Biblical and Balkan history overlap more than most curricula admit. This is the spine we teach from.

c. 1000 BC – AD 9

The Illyrian tribes

Independent Illyrian kingdoms and tribal confederations control the western Balkan coast and interior, before gradual absorption into Rome.

AD 9 – 5th c.

Roman Illyricum

Illyricum becomes a Roman province spanning much of the Balkans, later split into Dalmatia and Pannonia.

c. AD 57

Paul reaches "round about unto Illyricum"

Writing to the Romans, Paul describes his preaching as extending to the edge of Illyricum — placing the apostolic mission at the doorstep of the Balkans.

4th – 6th c.

Christianization & Nicopolis

Churches and bishoprics take root across the former Illyricum as the empire Christianizes, including the city Paul intended to winter in, Nicopolis.

863

Cyril and Methodius among the Slavs

The brothers from Thessaloniki devise the Glagolitic script and translate Scripture into Old Church Slavonic, shaping Slavic Christianity for a millennium.

15th – 19th c.

Ottoman era & the millet system

Balkan Christian communities persist under Ottoman rule, preserving liturgy, manuscripts, and identity through the millet system.

19th – 20th c.

National revivals

Balkan national movements recover language, church, and history together — the same recovery our foundation continues today.

What people tell us

A few words from people who have taken part in our programs.

I'd read Romans a dozen times and never once looked up where Illyricum actually was. This seminar changed how I read the whole book.
Marija H.
Seminar participant, Zagreb
Our youth group finally has language for why our own history and our faith aren't two separate things to learn.
Fr. Aleksandar P.
Partner parish, Skopje
The field trip to Split and Ohrid did more for my students in ten days than a semester of lectures.
